When it comes to calculate the amount of wood for your project, here some examples that can guide you.
To cover 100 square feet with planks of 5.5’’ wide, you will need 220 linear feet. Take your square footage and multiply x 2.2.

This plan has 40 sq.F. (8’x5’), 40 sq.f. x 2.2
= 88 linear feet, you will need 11 planks
of 8’ long. 
The same applies to calculate skirts, stairs and Stair risers.
Foresee 1015 % loss for cuts.
For wall sidings, generally the multiplier amount is 2.4, because of no open joints, planks are inserted.
